Information, Education & Advice - helping dogs in need

Our Residents - 2008:

Our special thanks to the T.R.P.D Pet Craft Project members and their kind donations received by the rescue dogs, providing these dogs with new leads, collars, dog coats for the winter and blankets.

The Endangered Dogs Defence & Rescue Ltd is not able to rehome all of its rescue dogs and some with ‘special needs’ have become our ‘long term residents’ having a home with us for the rest of their days.

Not all rescue dogs are appealing, some are old, some have behavioural problems which make them particularly difficult to rehome, and others may have been mistreated.

We have also cared for many dogs registered under the strict terms and conditions as laid down by the Dangerous Dogs Act legislation. For them life is bleak enough, never knowing the freedom to run without leash and muzzle restrictions, stigmatized and turned away unwanted and rejected.

You could help support one of the dogs listed below by sending a small ‘Gift Parcel’
please post to;

EDDR (state Dog’s Name), Post Office Box 1544, London W7 2ZB (Don’t forget your details so that we can acknowledge safe receipt.)

Maybe you would be interested in sponsoring a ‘special dog’ – we plan to offer our own ‘Sponsor a Special Dog’ option soon, please email us for details.

Lego:

I’m an active 13 -15yr old cross Staffie x Terrier. I’m a right handful & give everyone a run for their money!

The only time I ever sit still is to chew on my favourite toys, like my stuffed kongs. I don’t get on with other dogs & have been in and out of kennels all my life.

I like soft bedding, dental chew bones & rawhide sticks.

Toby:

I am a Shepherd cross neutered male.

I have quite a selection of behavioural problems due to a poor upbringing and some horrible past encounters prior to coming to the safety of EDDR.

I am very lively, energetic and love to play with other dogs of all shapes and sizes. I enjoy long walks and have been undertaking lots of training and socialisation to help me.

I have a food intolerance and need a specific diet, I hope to find a good home if someone experienced will give me a chance. I am very frightened of fireworks and need help during this time of year.

Until then I have lots of people to interact with and love a good game with all types of sturdy toys and puzzles to keep me occupied. I also like big chew bones.

Freddie:

FreddieI'm a Staffordshire Bull Terrier and about 12 years of age. I ended up in a stray dogs kennels as no one wanted me, my tail was amputated whilst in kennels as I chased it and it was infected and exploded. I was lucky to get a rescue place, a lady came to foster me to get me out of kennels as i was so unhappy, but she soon found out that i had quite a few problems-the main one being that i can't stop chasing my tail. With my age and constant tail chasing and barking there wasn't much hope for me, Amanda and Eugene at FreddieEndangered Dogs took me in to see if they could help with my problems.

It's taken nine months on the road to recover but they never gave up on me, i can never be rehomed as my day has to be managed-i can't cope with any attention from people, i love people and i'm fond of walks with my doggie friends too, but i've chased my tail for years and it's a hard habit to break, as soon as i get excited i start and then i don't know how to stop, but lucky for me they've worked out what sets me off and how to help calm me down, i also take natural remedies to help me. I love walks off lead through the field and chews they really help to relax me.

Amy:

Amy was handed into Hampshire Police, she was transferred to the local dog pound where she served the mandatory 7 day period given for an owner to reclaim, no one came forward to claim her and she was due to be put to sleep, the kennels held her a bit longer than usual as the staff felt very sorry for her- she had hidden from everyone at the back of her kennel and wet herself with fear. EDDR was contacted by the Dog Warden and asked to help, which we did, removing her from kennels and over to the EDDR.

Amy is approximately six years of age and has no doubt suffered sustained heavy physical abuse inflicted from a person(s), she would dive to the floor and tremble when you even raised your arm to scratch your head, having been around bull breeds for over twenty years-we know that Amy has been broken mentally, in our opinion, the abuse would have been from a young age, prolonged and particualry heavy.

Amy has never shown any aggression and will slowly begin to trust you once she realises she isn’t going to be hurt, she has improved greatly and gained lots of confidence, meeting new people and other dogs, she has been spayed, fully inoculated, micro chipped and also had a dental whilst with us.

Amy will especially cling to one person and follow them everywhere, she enjoys clicker training (with the quieter clicker) but finds the one to one attention difficult to cope with, it seems too much for her to concentrate and she can quickly become overwhelmed, she lacks confidence but this is something we are slowly re-building over time. Running with her doggie friends and lots of treats as she has a very good appetite is her favourite pastime as is just sitting next you with her body pressed onto your leg, she likes to be reminded that she is now safe.

BigBoy:

His name suits him! BigBoy was also abandoned and ended up in the local authority dog pound, the Dog Warden contacted us and asked if we could take him to prevent him being put to sleep. Arrangements were made with the help of Brendan who has American Bulldogs. BigBoy then came to the EDDR and he is not able to be rehomed due to a general lack of socialisation in the past, he has made many improvements over the past few weeks, is now more familiar with moving vehicles, bikes etc realising that it’s not a game to try and chase them and meeting lots of new people, he loves people and will be best friends with anyone who has a few Bonio’s going spare.

BigBoy is staying with the EDDR and due to be neutered shortly, he is oversexed and it is hoped that neutering will help with this problem. BigBoy’s favourite is porridge stuffed kong for breakfast and a large chew in the afternoon. He has his eye on a giant sized knotted chew bone.

Pagan:

Pagan is a Retriever cross, originally purchased from a Pet Shop at Christmas time, he was taken back in the New Year as the owner thought he didn’t look like a Retriever and had ‘dangly’ legs, the owner was given a refund and he was then sold at a discount to his next buyer.

Pagan lived with his second owner for almost a year but due to their work commitments he didn’t get much time and wasn’t doing too well.

He was brought to us and we soon discovered that he was under socialised, lacking in any confidence, pent up, hyperactive, another ‘Tarzan’ of the dog world he would throw himself into other dogs in a crude desperate attempt to make friends.

Pagan also suffers from food intolerances, pictured here following his operation after he became ill; a small piece of dog toy was discovered in his stomach having been swallowed at some point. He does still love his toys to keep him occupied.

Rodney:

Rodney was found wandering by the Local Dog Warden, with wounds and still bleeding, he was taken to the local kennels and treated by the vet. No one ever came forward to claim him, he had suffered a single penetrating puncture to his shoulder, another one of similar size to the other side of his body, his penis was sliced along the length of it and his abdomen was also cut in a long straight line.

A behaviourist carried out a detailed examination and assessment. Rodney is a Bull Terrier x, he adores people and has been good mixing with other dogs.

Rodney is under the care of the EDDR, he has been receiving lots of TLC and recovering from his wounds. He was in isolation until he recovered from Kennel Cough. Has been neutered, fully vaccinated and micro chipped. Rodney has been doing very well with his training and is in an EDDR foster home where it is hoped he will be able to stay-pending on the other resident dog, it has been a long road to recovery for him.

He is very lucky to be alive and his injuries have not resulted in any long term damage.
