Information, Education & Advice - helping dogs in need

American Bulldog SOS:

EDDR has been receiving an increasing number of enquires regarding American Bulldogs and Bulldog crosses, other rescues are reporting a similar rise with incoming requests for help and advice.

As the breed has in our opinion, undergone a steep rise in popularity, so has the numbers of dogs been bred by those known as 'back yard breeders' - only out to make money and with no knowledge or love for the breed. Then you have 'accidental matings' and people breeding with little thought as to why.

Dog pounds also have increasing numbers of American Bulldogs coming to them, being unclaimed at the end of their seven day period and then having nowhere to go.

As the number of dogs rises, so to does the number of dogs who are in need of a new home as their owners, for many varied reasons, are looking to re-home their dog.

Not all rescues will admit American Bulldogs as some refuse based on breed, others don't have any knowledge of the breed which is relatively new to the UK and not as well known in some areas as others. Some rescues are generally pushed to breaking point as it is, there are no regional breed rescues for owners to be referred to and we now have a situation where it is exceedingly difficult to find a rescue space for a dog in need.

A new web site has been set up to try and help with the re-homing of American Bulldogs and crosses of, already in rescue. If more good homes can be found, then not only does a deserving dog find a placement, but a space is freed-a space which can be used to help another dog.

EDDR is not a breed rescue, we have been faced with a problem and are trying to raise awareness. Other rescues are also trying to do what they can with limited resources and a serious lack of suitable home offers coming through.

It is upsetting to take enquiries every day from owners who need, for many genuine reasons, to re-home their American Bulldog or need some support and advice with the dog they already have.

So in a nutshell we have; not enough suitable homes coming through, next to no rescue spaces available, dogs in pounds with nowhere to go, no breed rescues, plenty of back yard breeders churning out dogs to line their own pockets before they move onto the next fad, a population increase and more and more dogs needing new homes for a variety of reasons.

If your rescue can possibly offer a space to an American Bulldog - PLEASE Contact us.
