PRESS RELEASE
Conservative Animal Welfare are disappointed that, yet again, the annual animal cruelty figures released today by the RSPCA have risen.
Suzy Gale, co-chairman of CAW says:
“This news is extremely upsetting, but hardly surprising. We hear, almost daily, of shelters in the UK bursting at the seams with unwanted dogs and cats, instances of extreme cruelty to animals and a general apathy with regard to animal welfare issues in the UK.
The new Animal Welfare Act may have been trumpeted as a triumph by some but the cruelty continues, and grows. Are we still a nation of animals lovers ?
Talk of a “duty of care” is all very well, but when are measures going to be taken to actually enforce that duty ? We are of the view that all domestic pets should be microchipped and registered, by law, and that the public should be persuaded of the responsibility they take on when buying or adopting an animal.
The animal welfare organisations, both large and small, cannot be expected to support and enforce legislation without proper back-up from central government. Our politicians, of all parties, need to take on board the fact that cruelty continues to increase – year on year – and far more needs to be done to address the problem.
